By Jaaikaran Chanana.
In the shadow of war, where laughter is often silenced and play becomes a distant memory, one young visionary dared to rewrite the narrative—using a football bag as his canvas and hope as his ink. Jaaikaran Chanana’s initiative, Play for Ukraine, launched in April 2022, wasn’t just a response to the refugee crisis—it was a declaration. A declaration that joy belongs to every child, even those caught in the crossfire of displacement. What began as a grassroots campaign quickly evolved into a movement that stitched together dignity, resilience, and belonging.
The Power of a Kit.

At the heart of Play for Ukraine lies a deceptively simple idea: give children something to play with, something to cherish, something that whispers, ‘You matter.’ Each football kit—containing a ball proudly stamped “Play for ukraine”, a pump, and a sturdy bag—was more than equipment. It was a lifeline. A cultural artefact. A reminder that identity survives even in exile.
These kits travelled across borders, landing in refugee camps in Romania, Hungary, and Poland. With support from UNICEF Romania, Caritas Poland, and United Way, over a thousand children received them. And with every kit came a ripple of joy—a moment where muddy fields transformed into stadiums of imagination, and children remembered what it felt like to simply be children.
Beyond Play: Planting Seeds of Possibility.
But Jaaikaran’s vision didn’t end with sport. It opened doors for education through “Play for Ukraine”. It has boosted the children’s confidence in refugee camps through confidence-building activities, nurturing not just minds but dreams. This initiative has transformed the lives of children in the refugee camps, giving them a hope for a better life through education. And, empowering them with hope for a better future.
Humanitarian Aid with Heart.
What makes this initiative extraordinary isn’t just its scale but its grandeur. By weaving together sport, education, and storytelling, children have reclaimed their identities with a better future.
In tents and temporary shelters, his football kits became vessels of hope. Not just toys—but tools of emotional healing. With every bounce, the ball echoed with laughter, pride, and the quiet defiance of children who refused to be forgotten.
A Blueprint for Compassionate Action
For those of us who believe in the power of storytelling to drive change, Play for Ukraine offers more than inspiration—it offers a blueprint. It reminds us that legacy isn’t built in headlines or statistics. It’s built in the sparkle of a child’s eye, in the sound of feet chasing a ball across gravel, and in the resilience of those who dare to dream again. Jaaikaran Chanana didn’t just give refugee children football kits. He gave them back their childhood. It is a movement that shows everything is possible with a dream for every youth. All it needs is courage.
